Have you seen or heard about Schmetz Super Universal anti stick needles? They are a new needle which are industrial graded, but redesigned for our domestic sewing machines! And if you are into your quilting, sew with adhesive fabrics/sprays or embroidery stabiliser then these are the needles for you.
These needles have a non-stick coating of NIT* (Nickel-Phosphor-PTFE), which means that when you are sewing with adhesive fabrics (think sticky back felt/Velcro), tacky basting sprays like 505 used in quilting or embroidery stabiliser, then this non-stick coating stops your needle from clogging up and makes for smooth sewing and stitches.
They also have been specially designed to have a distinctive scarf and unique eye which prevents skipped stitches and your thread from breaking. The needle has a slightly rounded point, so it can be used across most materials, trouble-free! The particularly strong conical blade reinforcement guarantees that even thick fabrics like denim do not pose a challenge
As well as a non-stick coating, the other difference to the standard universal needles by Schmetz, is that the eye of the needle is extra large (perfect for embroidery projects that uses thicker thread), but it does mean the sizing is slightly different – a super universal needle corresponds to a standard universal needle that’s two sizes bigger; A size 70/10 SUPER UNIVERSAL needle is the equivalent to a standard size 90/14.
If you work a lot with 505 basting spray on your quilts or sew a lot of machine embroidery projects, and get frustrated with the quality of your stitching, or glue always building up on your standard universal needles, then you may want to give these needles a go!

*HINT AND TIP; Because of the non-stick coating, when using a new Super Universal Needle for the first time, the first few stitches may appear darker, but it will quickly lighten – this does not affect the properties of the needle. Because of this, for sewing with light coloured fabrics we recommend that before sewing your project straight away, you “sew in” the needle on some scrap fabric for around 1m.
